Four decades I have taken on the challenge and privilege of teaching and mentoring young hearts and minds through our unique method of martial arts training. During this time I have helped to instill the inspiration and character development that is inherent in Taekwondo training. As a result, I am honored to have been able to assist those around me to stretch outside of their comfort zones and achieve their dreams. In some cases, the things people have been able to achieve Is nothing short of miraculous, but more on that in a moment…
"We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act, but a habit."
Aristotle
In my career as a martial artist, Olympic Coach and mentor I have also, unfortunately, witnessed tragedies. These tragedies center around those individuals (and parents of those individuals) that chose not to walk the path of discipline; conversely, choosing the seemingly easier path. Witnessing (albeit from afar) the very death of the belief in oneself and the will to even try to fulfill and reach for their dreams. This is an agonizing experience. Most of these tragedies could have easily been averted with the practice of and development of self discipline and the other character building life skills. However, so many are ruled by their limiting beliefs and even if they begin training in martial arts the vast majority quit before they attain their black belt, but more of why in a moment…
“Success is a ladder you cannot climb with your hands in your pockets.”
American Proverb
People quit for a myriad of reasons and separate themselves from a practice that I have personally seen and experienced change people’s destiny. These reasons are what I call ‘an error in their thinking’ and mark the downward spiral of negative conditioning that has deep and long-lasting implications. These errors in thinking and perspective are frustrating and have warning signs. Ask yourself if you feel that:
You are not progressing as fast as other students?
Your child is not progressing as fast as other children?
You feel you need more time and personal attention?
A negative experience has made you feel that you are not talented enough?
You (or your child) will do poorly on your test in front of your peers?
Training is too challenging and you might as well stop wasting your time?
This mode of thinking leads to ‘what If’ thinking that cripples the spirit. Have you ever thought (or heard your child say) “What if I”:
Fail my belt test?
Fail my exam at school?
Get cut from the team?
Blow my job interview?
Can’t do it?
fail?
This type of thinking and outlook on life is more prevalent than people will want to admit, but it is a practice that should not be dismissed as trivial. It can dictate the outcome of your life without question.
“There is no use whatever trying to help people who do not help themselves. You cannot push anyone up a ladder unless he be willing to climb himself.”
Andrew Carnegie
We are living in an ever increasingly competitive global community. The competition to get into the best schools, find the best jobs and create the best destiny for ourselves and our families is becoming increasingly aggressive. The need to find any competitive edge for ourselves and our children is essential to success and living the life-style we desire.
The challenge is exacerbated by the state of the economy, limited scholarships and in most parts of the country a lack of high quality teachers and schools. This is all leading to an even more aggressive fight for parents to enroll their children in the best schools and adults getting into the best universities.
Colleges, Awash in Applications, Turning Away Even Top Students
“The headlines are stark. Anxiety levels are sky-high. Parents, students and educators whisper about the straight-A student who never received an acceptance letter. As a result, the college admissions game is starting earlier and earlier.”
Washington Post April 7, 2006
Let’s be honest here, every single day I turn on the radio or television there are more horror stories of people (and many of them children) who are the victims of violence. This is a subject which I am most passionate about, because I endeavor to empower my students and ensure that they will never be victims!
There are endless activities that you can do or put your child in, but training in martial arts will equip them to deal with a world that seems to prey on the kind, good natured and loving people.
“It’s nearly unthinkable, but every year thousands of children become victims of crime—whether it’s kidnappings, violent attacks, or sexual abuse.”
Federal Bureau of Investigation
The truth that people outside of martial arts do not understand is that martial art training is an education that gives you a competitive edge that few people outside of the discipline can fully understand. The attributes gained through training are hard pressed to be found elsewhere or in any other activity. It sharpens the mind, strengthens the spirit and forges the body into a defensive weapon. However, the true distinction in success training is to seek out mentors that have not only been champions themselves and have created champions, but live by the principle. This is extra ordinarily hard to find.
"Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in. It's a state of mind-you could call it character in action."
Vince Lombard
Nexus Taekwondo martial art training will develop in you and your children key and empowering attributes that engrain self discipline that is critical to success.
“But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.”
President Barak Obama
The power of self discipline has applications that reach far outside of the competitive arena and extend into the classroom. This has been documented repeatedly and that self discipline can be more beneficial than any physical or mental innate talent.
Psychological Science – Research Article Self-Discipline Outdoes IQ in Predicting Academic Performance of Adolescents
“ABSTRACT—In a longitudinal study of 140 eighth-grade students, self-discipline measured by self-report, parent report, teacher report, and monetary choice questionnaires in the fall predicted final grades, school attendance, standardized achievement-test scores, and selection into a competitive high school program the following spring. In a replication with 164 eighth graders, a behavioral delay-of gratification task, a questionnaire on study habits, and a group-administered IQ test were added. Self-discipline measured in the fall accounted for more than twice as much variance as IQ in final grades, high school selection, school attendance, hours spent doing homework, hours spent watching television (inversely), and the time of day students began their homework. The effect of self-discipline on final grades held even when controlling for first marking-period grades, achievement-test scores, and measured IQ. These findings suggest a major reason for students falling short of their intellectual potential: their failure to exercise self-discipline.”

I have always encouraged my students to consider each other as a family of unique individuals bound by the common goal of empowerment and success. In so doing, they have learned to support and rely on each other. I have included a private member forum, so that Nexus on-line members can interact freely with a focus on success. I am excited to offer these bonuses for the first 48 students to join the on-line private mentorship. However, I just can’t do this forever as the costs associated with hosting and supporting the software are prohibitive. The truth is that there are soon to be included bonuses that I won’t mention here and as I am offering those free and incurring those costs, I just can’t do this indefinitely.

Until recently, I was enjoying a touch point with my students every day. Teaching and helping others to achieve their dreams is the single most fulfilling experience I can hope to attain as a coach and instructor. Whether I am helping a child to develop self discipline or an adult to achieve another Olympic Gold medal, the fulfillment is the same and the opportunity to help a privilege.
That all came to a temporary and dramatic stop as a loved one became very ill. The odyssey of hospitals, testing and intensive care units has lead us to the top medical facility in the country; and thus, away from my students. I truly appreciate all the text, emails and support during this time.
All the while, I have been mentoring a myriad of students via email, but I just cannot keep up with the volume of communications effectively this way. As a response to the multitude of requests I have been receiving and in an effort to fulfill my destiny as an instructor I have decided to take some time to create this course.

I have repeatedly told that parents who have come to my school to leave their children with me until they go to college (and if they go to college nearby, then just leave them with me) and they will exceed the expectations and dreams they have for them. Years later, these parents come to understand that statement was a true. What should you expect from training and your development of self discipline?
Your confidence will transcend your training environment and become part of who you are!
You will develop the tools necessary to handle all of life’s challenges!
You will learn the key distinctions that will help you to summon the confidence to reach for your goals and dreams!
You will develop a healthy life-style based on health of mind, body and spirit!
You will learn to defend yourself & develop a heightened awareness of your surroundings that will allow you to avoid dangerous situations before they can develop!
You will develop the presence of mind under extreme pressure which will allow you to make the correct decisions in a crisis!
You will develop core strength, flexibility and coordination enabling you to excel in the sport of your choice!
You will learn to strengthen your mental faculties and develop uncommon focus and concentration that students have used to help achieve straight ‘A’s, gold medals, job promotions, and more!
You will develop the perseverance to never quit on your dream, goals and ambitions no matter how long it takes!
You will learn the mind-set of a champion!
… I have been involved in martial arts for nearly forty years, and have been teaching and mentoring students for decades. I have witnessed the positive and dramatic effects that self-discipline attained through martial arts training has had on individuals. Unfortunately, I have also witnessed equally dramatic negative effects of the lack of self discipline on people’s lives. The lack of the development of self discipline leads to the following:
‘9 Early Warning Failure Factors’
They tend to quit easily
They have a “I can’t” attitude
They have low self confidence
They have low self esteem
They have a very poor self image
They are very susceptible to peer pressure
They do not believe in themselves and doubt their abilities
They do not respect themselves
They lack a key foundational attribute synonymous with success
These ‘Failure Factors’ lead to undesirable behaviors and negative live outcomes:
Even if the individual has enough confidence to try new and positive activities, then they often quit before any real progress was made and for the wrong reasons:
Afraid to face a New challenge
Someone, or some situation frightened the individual
When they practice avoidance behavior, it reinforces the fear in them and by the time these individuals reach their teens they have started and quit multiple activities. Failure has been hardcoded in their psyche to quit and repeat the pattern over and over again.
The “I Can’t” attitude becomes so engrained that it develops into a conditioned response to any stressor. This condition is extremely limiting and has marked the individual’s path toward imminent failure. The individual will soon thereafter lose their base confidence to try new and existing positive activities reasoning that they are doomed to failure, so why even try. This situation is crippling! Over time, this pattern will literally drain the self confidence, self esteem and self image out of the individual. The next casualty is their belief of who they are and their place in the world. They see little value in themselves often leading to very destructive behaviors:
Aggressiveness or violence
Sexual promiscuity
Lack of interest in school and studies
Drug or alcohol abuse
Vandalism
Street gangs and more…
The individuals are very susceptible to peer pressure and tend to gravitate to those who suffer from the same lack of self discipline and its character building attributes. Tragically, these peers will help to reinforce the negative and self limiting beliefs, behaviors and practices creating a highly unfavorable destiny. The calamity continues with the loss of all self respect. The individual feels helpless, hollow and empty. They often fall into a deep depression and some look to injure themselves or worse.
In the scenarios above there are varying degrees to which an individual (be that a child or an adult) will be effected. Did you recognize any of these traits in someone you care for?
Did you recognize it in yourself?
The lack of the development of self discipline will lead to failure on myriad of levels; and worst, the resultant eroding of self.
"Anything unattempted remains impossible."

I have had parents that have come to me in desperation to assist their child and help them to learn success. I have had adults come to train searching for a way to stop smoking (and they smoked two packs a day for over fifteen years), or lose the sixty extra life-threatening pounds they are carrying around. I have had victims of assault learn to defend themselves and no longer be victims. I have had children grow from toddlers to National Champions.
The solution is clear and the empowering effects of martial arts training has been documented and has proven to be the very best education in self discipline (and other character building attributes) that I have ever engaged in or taught my students over the years. It impacts people’s lives for the positive and develops strengths that can predestine success.
“The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication."
Cecil B. De Mille
As a coach, I get very excited about the power of the education that martial arts offer. All the qualities listed above have become part of students I have trained and mentored. It becomes synonymous with who they are to the point where people believe they were just born with these innate qualities. You can attain the quiet, capable confidence that is a hallmark of attaining your black belt, and these qualities can and will become part of who you are. Ultimately, you will attain the greatest gift: that of being able to help others to develop self discipline essential to their success.
The Power of Self-Discipline
"The need to develop and harness self-discipline at an early age, while critical in any culture, may take on greater importance in a society filled with complex demands, challenges, and stresses. When self-discipline is effectively learned during childhood, there is a greater likelihood of successful coping and accomplishment in adulthood. Thus, it is not surprising that in our fast paced, often chaotic world, children capable of implementing self-discipline at young ages appear to negotiate the maze of family, school, friends, and community more successfully than those who struggle with this ability. Effective self-discipline implies that a child has internalized a set of rules so that even without the presence of a parent or other caregiver, the child will act in a thoughtful, reflective manner."
“What I like most about training here is that it gives me a lot of confidence and it makes me a lot stonger... Master Amani... he is different from a lot of other masters, he believes in our dream!”

Now, I don’t take any cholesterol medication, and my blood pressure back down to that of a normal person. I gained physical as well as personal strength, and can now enjoy precious time with his children. I feel so much better. "Thank you for your support and I will carry your teaching with me forever...."
“Probably one of the biggest reasons that I want to thank you is for your ability to guide young people such as myself on a good moral path. The lessons that you taught us were invaluable in developing character. I remember one of your biggest lessons being on respect. A virtue that many people talk about and quote famous sayings on, but you were the only one that I ever felt really understood the concept of respect. It was not simply opening a door for people, although it is a nice gesture, rather it is the ability to recognize the uniqueness of any individual no matter who they are, and to be able to appreciate what they have to say and their viewpoint. I thank you very much for teaching me respect and that is something that I plan to take with me throughout my life even if I never get the opportunity to visit again, which hopefully will not happen. You are truly a moral guardian of many children’s future and I hope that you never lose what truly makes you unique. Thank you for your support and I will carry your teaching with me forever.”

"The way I look and feel now is just a bonus on top of the growth of the relationship I have with my daughter..."
“I am 46 yrs. old and both my 9 yr. old daughter and I are students. My original intention was to have my daughter join taekwondo for the discipline aspect of the sport. Master Amani convinced me to give taekwondo a try too. I thought, why not? This would be something my daughter and I could do together and benefit from physically at the same time. It’s turned out to be one of the smarter decisions I’ve made. Achieving our next belt rank has given us a goal to strive for. Our fellow classmates were always ready to lend a hand and encourage us in any way possible. There is nothing better than working out in a group atmosphere, especially this group of people. The hard work has paid off for me physically, within the first eight months I had lost 37 pounds. The way I look and feel now is just a bonus on top of the growth of the relationship I have with my daughter. ”

"For my wife and I as parents, this is the best thing that could have happened to our son..."
“The introduction of my son into the school was primarily for reasons of discipline. He was lacking in attention and discipline in school. Fortunately, we met with his teacher who put us in contact with Master Amani and he gave my son the opportunity to participate in these classes through his school. In that time, which amounts to about three years now my son has gained a lot in the areas of discipline and attention. For my wife and I as parents, this is the best thing that could have happened to our son. I am very satisfied with the work he has accomplished here. I believe that all of the coaches and Master Amani…they are the kind of people that support you. For me it is fantastic!”
